The MAN Diesel Tier II Engine Programme
IMO (International Maritime Organisation) is currently discussing new tightened regulations for the emissions of oxides of nitrogen (NOx) and sulphur (SOx) for main engines installed on ships with keel laying after 1 January 2011 The new rules, referred to as Tier II, are expected to be ratified in October 2008 While the SOx limits can be complied with by limiting the sulphur contents in fuels, the NOx limits will have an impact on engine layout, efficiencies and eventually on the engine programme Basically, all engines in our programme can be made and adjusted to comply with the Tier II NOx limit, but with varying impact on efficiency and physical execution among the various engine models
In this context, electronically controlled engines, ME types, will have an advantage Based on process calculations and with due regard to actually recorded efficiencies
of engines, new Tier II efficiencies are calculated for the relevant engines
