The original draft of this textbook was prepared by the late Professor Papanastasiou. Following his unfortunate death in 1994, we assumed the responsibility of completing and publishing the manuscript. In editing and completing the final text, we made every effort to retain the original approach of Professor Papanastasiou. However, parts of the book have been revised and rewritten so that the material is consistent with the intent of the book. The book is intended for upper-level undergraduate and graduate courses.
